The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its Fifteenth Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony on May 16, 2016 to five distinguished persons, in recognition of the remarkable contributions to the University and the community. Dr. Akihiro Nagahara, our Managing Director and CEO, is one of the five to be granted the honor.

Dr. Nagahara started the support to CUHK with a fund donation of US$1 Million on behalf of the Company in 1982 by setting up a cultural fund at New Asia College to facilitate the College’s development and cultural exchanges. CUHK has got favorable ranking in The World University Ranking with recognition and compliment over the years, and with even more outstanding performance on some specific subjects. Having studied in Taiwan and Japan respectively, plus his life and business in Hong Kong for years, Dr. Nagahara shared his views on the universities of 3 different places, "Universities in Taiwan and Japan put more focus on the locality whereas the globalization is comparatively strong in Hong Kong. The students of Hong Kong come from all over the world, with certain standard of English. As a result they are strong in and also keen on communication and interaction with people of different culture and background.” Dr. Nagahara always believes that the future hope for the world and the community lies on the next generation. With the unique and valuable advantages as mentioned, there must be tremendous potential for the students of Hong Kong to further explore and bring us an even better future. And that is exactly one of the reasons why Dr. Nagahara keeps giving great support to the interactions among different places for the students. Dr. Nagahara keeps making fund sponsor for scholarship to New Asia College (CUHK) each year.

Dr. Nagahara brought the innovative idea of unsecured personal loan to Hong Kong in 1977 and assisted in the set-up of JCG Finance Company, Limited (Renamed as Public Finance Limited now) in Hong Kong, which was the first personal finance company with scale and it indeed signified the landmark with significant impact for the development of the personal loan industry in Hong Kong till now. For all those impactful influence and contributions Dr. Nagahara has made, a nickname with appreciation and compliments of “Father of Personal Loan” was granted to him in the industry.

Simultaneously, Dr. Nagahara is the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Licensed Money Lenders Association Limited since its establishment in 1999. Again, it simply reveals the importance and influence of his contribution for the personal loan industry in Hong Kong, with the recognition of the government and the industry.

Apart from the support given to the education aspect, Dr. Nagahara is keen in servicing the community and very supportive of charities. He has been the Director of Po Leung Kuk, and is currently Honorable Chairman of the Hong Kong & Macau Taiwanese Association Ltd. He is also the Director of Hong Kong and Macau Taiwanese Charity Fund Limited, member of the College Board of Trustees of various universities and Honorable Chairman of different associations. Led and influenced by Dr. Nagahara, the Company Volunteer Team has been participating in many community services and charity activities continuously, including regular visits to elderly and the activity on caring the disadvantaged people and minority group in the society.
